A 45-year-old woman presents with jaundice, pruritus, and the passage of dark urine for two weeks. No other symptoms are present. She had a similar episode one year ago, which lasted for a week and resolved spontaneously. She did not seek medical advice at that time. She has no past medical or surgical history; there is no significant family history. She is not on any medications, including over-the-counter medications or supplements. There is no history of sick contacts. She denies intravenous drug abuse. She has never been transfused with blood products. She has had a single stable sexual partner for a decade now. She only has 1 to 2 standard drinks a week, socially. A full blood count is normal and a urine pregnancy test is negative.
